Welcome To Our Forum For Civic Discussion

Welcome to the Texas Civic Education Foundation, thank you for stopping by! Our mission is to promote civic education and engagement in Texas. To that end, this blog is a space where we intend to explore and discuss civic-minded topics. We will use this space to ask and answer questions about what it means to be a responsible citizen and what civic engagement by informed and educated citizens should look like.

We will ask questions such as:

What are civics?

What is civic education?

How should civics be taught in public education?

What are some of the duties and responsibilities of citizens in a free society?

What is the proper role of government in the lives of free individuals?

What is the proper relationship between federal, state, and local governments?

Should the government be involved in the economy? If if so to what extent?

To what extent should the government protect citizens from their own poor choices?

Does the Constitution give us rights or protect our natural rights? What is the difference?

Why should United States law and policy remain rooted in a document that is hundreds of years old?

What place does the Electoral College have in modern society; shouldn’t we be a direct democracy?

How can people of differing viewpoints maintain civil relationships in a hyper-partisan political environment?

How should civic-minded citizens engage elected leaders and policymakers?

We will explore different forms of government, consider differences between them, and evaluate their respective strengths and weaknesses. We will invite citizens to participate in civic discussion and engage with elected leaders and candidates for public office.

Thank you again for visiting this space. We hope you enjoy the discussion and the journey as we explore civic life in Texas and consider ways to improve civic education and engagement!
